BioFord woke up blearily, and he was dimly aware that something was different. He froze when he realized what it was. At some point during the night Gage's strange sleeping position had given way and he had ended up leaning against Ford in his sleep.
Ford was curled against the arm of the sofa and a pillow, with Gage's head on his upper-arm, just below his shoulder. For a moment Ford thought Gage was awake, but then he realized that the other boy slept with his eyes half-open. The eerily light blue-gray color of Gage's eyes peeked though half-lidded slits, but the other boy's even breathing and his position leaning against Ford revealed that he was still fast asleep.
Ford glanced toward the window and the dim light behind the curtains revealed that it was still very early. He wondered what had caused him to wake up, and it didn't occur to him that the presence of someone else had grown back into an unfamiliar thing. If he'd thought about it he would have remembered that in the beginning with Linsey he had often been awakened when she so much as coughed. None of that occurred to him, though, and he closed his eyes again without shifting for another couple of hours sleep before real daylight.
